Our Story
Mr. Giovanni
The story of Upside Pizza is rooted in three generations of passion, family, and pizza-making tradition. It all started with Giovanni “Nonno” Russo, an Italian immigrant who moved to Berlin in the 1950s with nothing but a dream and a secret family pizza dough recipe. Giovanni opened his first pizzeria, offering Berliners a true taste of Italy. His pizzas weren’t just meals—they were a way of bringing people together. His shop became a local gathering place, where people of all backgrounds could enjoy authentic, handcrafted pizzas and experience the warmth of Italian hospitality.
Mr. Antonio Russo
In the 1980s, Giovanni’s son, Antonio Russo, took over the family business. Growing up working alongside his father, Antonio learned the art of pizza-making from the ground up. Under his leadership, the pizzeria expanded its menu and embraced a more modern approach while staying true to the traditional recipes passed down from Nonno Giovanni. Antonio’s warm personality and belief that pizza was about more than just food—it was about family, memories, and community—helped the business grow, making it a beloved local spot.
Mr. Marco Russo
Fast forward to today, and Upside Pizza is now led by Marco Russo, Antonio’s son. Marco carries the family legacy forward with a bold vision for the future of pizza. While honoring the traditions of his grandfather and father, Marco’s philosophy is all about pushing the boundaries of flavor. With a focus on high-quality ingredients, creative toppings, and unique flavor combinations, he’s reimagined the classic pizzeria experience. The name “Upside Pizza” perfectly reflects Marco’s approach—turning the traditional pizza experience “upside down,” blending the best of the old world with fresh new ideas.
